Low Speed Accident Injuries

When people think of car accidents, they tend to think of the devastating accidents they might see on I-4 or the horrible collisions that happen at intersections that leave car parts all over the intersection with occupants of the cars sure to have suffered serious injuries.

Accidents of that type are horrible and injure drivers in Florida many times a day. Through 10/27/20, there have been 264,000 crashes with over 164,000 people injured in car accidents in Florida. That is 878 crashes every day in Florida with 545 drivers being injured in a car accident every day.*

Not all of these accidents are the devastating type that you may picture in your mind when you think of car accidents. Most accidents happen close to home and are low speed accidents. People who have been involved in a low-speed accident can suffer injuries that change their quality of life without high speeds and devastating collisions.

A study conducted by the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine analyzed over 100 U.S. minor rear aligned crashes between passenger vehicles where the change in speed was less than 10 miles per hour.**

What the study found was that 113 occupants of the vehicles struck in the rear-end low-speed collisions were diagnosed within five weeks post-crash with 427 injuries resulting from being struck from the rear at less than 10 miles per hour.**

The majority of the injuries diagnosed were to the cervical spine area at 29.7% of diagnosed injuries. The lumbar region accounted for 23.2% of injuries with the 3rd largest area being the thoracic region at 14.3% of diagnosed injuries.**

What Could a Low-Speed Injury Mean for You?

It is important to remember that injuries can occur in an accident even at speeds less than 10 miles per hour. You do not have to suffer massive car damage to have injuries to the occupants of the car.

If you are the driver or occupant of a car that has been rear-ended in a low-speed accident, it is important that you get checked by a doctor right away. The soreness you may be feeling after an accident could be the sign of an injury that needs treatment.
