Spine and Muscle Pain Treatments

Our team of anesthesiologists and board-certified neurosurgeons provides targeted image-guided treatments to relieve spinal and muscle pain and improve mobility without surgery.

An epidural steroid injection (ESI) is a procedure used to treat pain caused by irritation or inflammation of spinal nerves. It involves injecting a corticosteroid (anti-inflammatory medication), often combined with a local anesthetic (a medicine that numbs pain in a small part of your body), into the epidural space—the area around the spinal cord and nerve roots. These injections also include saline to flush out inflammatory fluids, which helps reduce pain even more. ESIs can relieve pain caused by herniated or bulging discs.

A small amount of anesthetic is injected into a facet joint (the joints that connect the bones in your spine) or medial branch nerve (a nerve that carries pain signals from the facet joints). These injections can identify the exact source of pain and may provide short-term relief. The results help guide further treatments, such as radiofrequency neurotomy.

This minimally invasive procedure uses heat to deactivate nerves that send pain signals to the brain. RFN often provides long-term relief for nine to 14 months or longer. RFN is only performed after a medial branch block confirms the pain source. Relief can appear gradually over three to five weeks

Trigger point injections treat painful muscle “knots” in the neck, back or shoulders. The injections contain a local anesthetic that is sometimes combined with steroids. These medicines relax the muscle, reduce pain and improve your range of motion. You may need multiple trigger point injections for lasting results.

Joint Pain Treatments

We provide injections for large joints, like hips, knees, shoulders, and the sacroiliac (SI) joints, two large joints in your lower back. These injections reduce inflammation and reduce pain while improving function.

For example, large joint steroid injections deliver steroids and an anesthetic to reduce inflammation and pain. They improve mobility and support faster recovery after a car accident or workplace injury.

Advanced Spine Procedures

For chronic or complex spinal conditions, we offer innovative, minimally invasive procedures to target the source of your pain.

Relievant Intracept® Procedure

The Relievant Intracept procedure treats chronic lower back pain caused by damage to certain bones in your spine called endplates.

Endplates sit between your vertebrae and spinal discs. A nerve called the basivertebral nerve runs through the endplates. If your endplates are damaged, you may feel pain in the basivertebral nerve.

Using Intracept, your provider can burn off, or ablate, part of the basivertebral nerve. This helps treat pain and provides long-term relief for 60% to 75% of patients. It may also help you avoid spinal fusion surgery.

Elliquence Disc-FX® Procedure

Herniated discs in your lower back can press on nerves and cause pain. Often, doctors have to perform surgery to remove a herniated disc if the pain is very bad.

However, Elliquence Disc-FX may help you avoid surgery. If the disc has not completely torn, your provider can perform this procedure to remove damaged disc material and reduce pressure on spinal nerves without major surgery

Interventional Pain Management FAQs

Interventional pain management can help with back, neck, joint and muscle pain caused by injury, herniated discs, arthritis, spinal stenosis, sciatica or radiculopathy (nerve pain radiating into the arms and legs).

Yes. All procedures are minimally invasive, which means they do not require large cuts (incisions). They are also image-guided and performed by trained specialists. The risks are lower compared to surgery.

Pain relief can begin within a few days, though sometimes it may take a week or more.

Short-term injections may relieve pain for hours to weeks. Procedures like Radiofrequency neurotomy or Intracept® can last months or longer, depending on the condition.

Every person is different, but it’s common to have a series of treatments, especially if you have a serious condition.

These treatments help many people avoid surgery. Your provider will discuss all options if you need more care.
